A poem featured in a charity art exhibition organised by students in August 2022, Following the overturning of Roe v Wade, the exhibition raised money for Planned Parenthood, a charity that helps women access abortions, contraception and legal care, following the overturning of Roe v Wade.
All of the artwork was created by a wonderful group of students who based their pieces around their own interpretation of autonomy.
I ask you Mr Senator.
How can we be in the year 2022,
Over 100 years after the dream of the woman’s vote came true,
Where there are superyachts, rockets and Musk’s inventions,
Yet the issue of women’s rights is in fragile suspension?
When the sentence for pro-choice and deciding our fate,
is 10 times longer than the sentence for rape?
How can there be talk of Saudi's 'linear city’,
While the future of women is a future to pity?
So I ask you, Mr Senator, how has Roe v. Wade been justified?
And how many reasons has the US congress tied
To the safety of the flagship of religious authority
At the expense of women’s safety and body autonomy?
This flagship is the scapegoat behind which real reasons hide
Namely, the continuation of the patriarchy and its endangered pride.
If the justification is religion, and you rely on the story of Eve,
Let me remind you Mr Senator, it is a myth, not a fact to be believed.
It is confusing to see politicians - ‘free world’ in tow,
Basing their laws on a 17th century manifesto,
Which was created whilst slavery was still very much legal,
And women were viewed as inferior and evil.
So we warn you Mr Senator, of the cracks in your glass ceiling,
Which de Beauvoir saw through and ignited the feeling
Of strength and desire to start a revolution,
To stop inequality and sexist pollution.
And one day soon, we'll leave you to reminisce,
On the time you once ruled, where morality was amiss.
